Timo Pauli Blomqvist (born January 23, 1961 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who from 1977 to 1998 played for the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League as well as Jokerit Helsinki , Reipas Lahti and the Espoo Blues in the SM-liiga has played. His son Sami is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Timo Blomqvist began his career as a hockey player in 1977 with Jokerit Helsinki , for which he was active in the SM-liiga for the following three seasons . He was then selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as the 89th player of the Washington Capitals . Initially, however, the defender played another year in the SM-liiga at Reipas Lahti . Before the 1981/82 season Blomqvist finally moved to the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League , where he was regularly used in the following four seasons. After he was on the ice in the 1985/86 season exclusively for their farm team , the Binghamton Whalers from the American Hockey League , he received a contract as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils in 1986 , for which he was in the 1986/87 season scored an assist in 20 games.
After six years in North America, Blomqvist returned to Europe in 1987, where he played for three years at MoDo Hockey Örnsköldsvik and Malmö IF in the Swedish Elitserien in the following six seasons . With Malmö he became Swedish champion in 1992 . Blomqvist then signed for a year in the Norwegian Eliteserien with Sparta Sarpsborg before returning to Finland for two seasons with the Espoo Blues . This was followed by one season each in other European countries at Wiener EV in the Alpine League and ES Weißwasser in the second-class 1st German league , before Blomqvist ended his career in 1998 with the lower-class Finnish clubs EPS Espoo and Ahmat Hyvinkää.
International
For Finland , Blomqvist took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 1979 , 1980 and 1981 , and the A World Championships in 1985 and 1989 . In addition, he was in the squad of Finland at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and 1992 in Albertville .
