Timo Pielmeier (born July 7, 1989 in Deggendorf ) is a German ice hockey goalkeeper who has been playing for ERC Ingolstadt from the German Ice Hockey League since 2013 .

Career

Pielmeier started his career in the youth department of his home club Deggendorfer EC . In 2004 he moved to the young eagles Mannheim , with whom he won the title in the DNL in the 2004/05 season . After only one year in Mannheim, he moved to the Kölner Haien , where he was mainly in the goal of the DNL team, but was also eligible to play with a sponsorship license for the professional team. There, after the injury of the goalkeeper Oliver Jonas, he received some appearances in the DEL as a back-up behind Thomas Greiss . With the DNL team of the Kölner Haie, Pielmeier won the German junior championship in the 2006/07 season .

Pielmeier was then available in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft . The San Jose Sharks selected him in the third round in 83rd place, whereupon Pielmeier moved to North America and in the 2007/08 season for the St. John's Fog Devils , who made him 12th in the first round in the CHL Import Draft 2007. Had selected players in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec was active. He received the RDS Rookie Excellence Award as the best newcomer to his team in the first half of the season. He also achieved the best catch quota in the league. Since the Fog Devils broke up at the end of the season, the Shawinigan Cataractes took over his transfer rights in the junior area. He led his team to the play-off final of the QMJHL, where they were defeated by the Drummondville Voltigeurs in seven games.

In the summer of 2008 he received a three-year contract with the San Jose Sharks. On March 4, 2009 he was given in a swap to the Anaheim Ducks and played in the 2009/10 season with their farm team in Bakersfield in the ECHL . On December 19, 2009, in the game against the Utah Grizzlies, he scored an empty net goal a few seconds before the end of the match to make it 6-4.

After spending the training camp at the Anaheim Ducks, the goalkeeper was sent to the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League at the second squad reduction . On February 19, 2011, Pielmeier made his debut for the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League when he was used in the encounter against the St. Louis Blues and had to accept five goals in twelve shots. It is his only NHL game so far.

On December 12, 2011, he was transferred to the New Jersey Devils along with defense attorney Kurtis Foster in exchange for Rod Pelley , Mark Fraser and a seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . However, he continued to play in the lower leagues ECHL and AHL.

At the beginning of June 2012, Pielmeier finally returned to Germany and signed a contract with the Landshut Cannibals in the 2nd Bundesliga , where he was voted debutant of the year in the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season. For the 2013/14 season he moved to ERC Ingolstadt in the DEL . With this team he became German champion in his first season. He played a decisive role in winning the title, especially in the final series against the Kölner Haie he held outstanding. He was voted DEL Rookie of the Year before the playoffs began . At the end of September 2016, Pielmeier agreed with the ERC on a long-term continuation of the cooperation until 2022.

International

In his early youth, Pielmeier played for various national ice hockey teams . With the U18 selection, he took part in the U18 World Championships in 2006 , where he was voted the best German player, and in 2007 in the top division. He also played in the top division at the U20 World Championships in 2007 and 2009 and immediately rose back to the top division at the U20 World Championship in 2008 , when the German team had to compete in the division after relegation in the previous year, To which he made a significant contribution as the best goalkeeper with the best catch rate and the lowest goals against goals.

He made his debut in the senior national team on December 17, 2013. At the 2015 and 2016 World Championships , he was in the goal of the German selection. He also took part in 2014 , when the German team won the tournament, and in the 2017 Deutschland Cup . Pielmeier crowned his international career by participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , where he won the silver medal with the DEB selection and was awarded the silver laurel leaf on June 7, 2018.

Together with regular goalkeeper Danny aus den Birken and Dennis Endras , Pielmeier formed the German goalkeeping trio and played in the second round match against world champions Sweden . He also played a few months later at the 2018 World Cup .
