Tipperary Hill traffic light

The Tipperary Hill traffic light is red

The Tipperary Hill traffic light in Syracuse , New York , USA, is likely to be the only traffic light with the green light above and the red light below. This arrangement has its origins in the fact that said traffic light was often the target of vandalism after its installation in 1925 because supporters of the Irish population found it discriminatory that the green light was below the red light.

It was only when the suggestion was made to reverse the order of the lights that the vandalism stopped. In 1928, at the request of the State of New York, the order of the lights was brought back into the normal sequence, but the system was again vandalized, so that the order of the signal lights was reversed again, which has remained to this day.
