State coat of arms of Tyrol, Austria

The Tyrolean coat of arms is an old coat of arms that dates back to the Middle Ages . It is the coat of arms of the old region of Tyrol , the Fürstete Grafschaft as well as two similar variants of today's Austrian state of Tyrol and the autonomous province of South Tyrol in Italy .

The Tyrolean eagle

Coat of arms of South Tyrol, Italy

The Tyrolean coat of arms shows the heraldic animal in a silver shield, the golden crowned and armored red eagle with golden wing clips with cloverleaf ends , the Tyrolean eagle .

Seals from 1205 show the Tyrolean eagle, the oldest colored depictions, however, date from the years 1271/1286. The seal images go to the time of Albert III. (Count 1202–1253) from the family of the Counts of Tyrol , who formed the origins of the region around Tyrol Castle near Merano.

The shield was at the time of the k. u. k.  The monarchy was still crowned with a prince's hat when Tyrol was a princeed county .

The assumption that it is the Brandenburg eagle is not tenable. When Margrave Ludwig (the Brandenburger) married Margarete Maultasch in 1342, the eagle was already evident in the Tyrolean coat of arms. The Bohemian eagle (black in silver, flame-armored), today Trento, did not enter the country until 1340.

State of Tyrol

The law of 17 May 2006 on the use and use of the state coat of arms (Tyrolean State Coat of Arms Act ) defines the form and use of the coat of arms.

§ 1 Tyrolean state coat of arms: The state coat of arms of the state of Tyrol is according to Art. 6 Para. 1 of the Tyrolean State Order 1989, LGBl.
in the silver shield the golden crowned and armored red eagle with golden wing clips with shamrock ends and a green wreath behind the head.

The laurel wreath is reminiscent of the Tyrolean struggle for freedom in the Napoleonic era.

The Andreas Hofer Kreuzer minted during the Tyrolean struggle for freedom show the Tyrolean eagle as it is present on the obverse.

South-Tirol

The South Tyrolean coat of arms was designed in 1982 by the Bozen architect and artist Helga von Aufschnaiter on behalf of the South Tyrolean provincial government under Silvius Magnago and confirmed by the Italian President in 1983. It was designed based on the model of the original coat of arms of the Counts of Tyrol without clover leaf ends and a golden crown. The Tyrolean coat of arms on the right outer wing of the altar of Tyrol Castle from 1370 served as a model .

Welschtirol (Trentino)

The coat of arms of Welschtirol , today's Trentino, has a black eagle, but also with golden wing clips, and with clover-leaf ends, in a red flame wreath. In heraldry it is the Wenceslas eagle . This form was only introduced with Prince-Bishop Nikolaus Abrein (1338–1347).

Use in municipal coats of arms

The coats of arms of numerous Tyrolean communities contain the Tyrolean eagle or parts of it to demonstrate that they belong to Tyrol. The coats of arms of Brixlegg , Landeck , Mareo / Enneberg , Meran , Radfeld , St. Anton am Arlberg , Sterzing , Dorf Tirol , Ton , Vomp and Wiesing contain the red eagle as a whole . The coats of arms of Glurns and Ulten show the split eagle, the coats of arms of Gerlos and Spiss the eagle head. Jungholz leads the eagle flight , Rettenschöss the eagle catch in the coat of arms.
