World Cup tournaments
1930 to 1962
As French Togoland, Togo had been a French mandate of the League of Nations since the First World War and of the United Nations after the Second World War . The Fédération Togolaise de Football was founded in 1954, but only accepted into FIFA in 1962 after independence from France . Therefore, Togo could not take part in the first seven world championships.
1966 in England
Togo did not register for the World Cup in the "motherland of football" . Since the teams from Africa, Asia and Oceania were only allowed one place in the final round, all 15 registered African teams withdrew.
1970 in Mexico
Togo did not register for the first World Cup in Central America either. Morocco was able to qualify as an African representative.
1974 in Germany
Togo took part in the qualification for the World Cup in the Federal Republic of Germany for the first time and had to play against Zaire . On June 6, 1972, both played their first World Cup qualifier in Lomé , which ended goalless. 14 days later, Zaire won the second leg in Kinshasa 4-0 and became the first sub-Saharan team to qualify for the World Cup in the course of further qualification , but this was the only participation for Zaire and the Democratic Republic of Congo to date.
1978 in Argentina
In qualifying for the World Cup in Argentina , Togo was then able to prevail in the first round in two games with 1-0 and 1: 1 and against Senegal . In the second round, after two defeats (0: 2 and 1: 2) against Guinea, the qualification for Togo was over. Guinea then failed in the third round to Tunisia, which was able to qualify for the first time.
1982 in Spain
In qualifying for the World Cup in Spain , for which the Africans were granted two starting places for the first time, Togo received a bye in the first round and reached the second round without a fight. Togo could not prevail against Niger there. After a 1-0 away win, Togo retired after a 1-2 home defeat due to the away goals rule . Niger then failed in the third round to Algeria , which qualified for the first time in the fourth round and surprisingly won against European champions Germany in Spain , but was then eliminated due to the non-aggression pact of Gijón .
1986 in Mexico
In qualifying for the second World Cup in Mexico , Togo was supposed to play Guinea in the first round, but withdrew. Guinea then failed in the second round to Tunisia, which could not qualify in the end.
1990 in Italy
To qualify for the second World Cup in Italy , Togo was supposed to face Gabon in the first round , but withdrew like four years earlier. Gabon finished in the second round in a group of four with Cameroon only in last place.
1994 in the United States
To qualify for the World Cup in the USA , Togo was added to the group with Zimbabwe , Egypt and Angola after the withdrawal of Sierra Leone . Togo lost five games and since neither Angola nor Togo could qualify for the second round after these games, the last game between the two did not take place. In the second round, group winners Zimbabwe were eliminated.
1998 in France
The qualification for the second World Cup in France went a little better. In the first round, Senegal was eliminated 2: 1 and 1: 1. In the second round, Cameroon, Angola and Zimbabwe were stronger. It was only possible to win once against Zimbabwe and also to split the points against Angola. Cameroon won the group and qualified for the World Cup.
2002 in Japan and South Korea
In qualifying for the first World Cup in Asia , Togo beat Guinea-Bissau 0-0 and 3-0 in the first round . In the second round, Cameroon, Angola and Zambia were stronger. Only Libya was weaker.
2006 in Germany
Togo was finally able to qualify for the second World Cup in Germany . After Equatorial Guinea was eliminated in the first round (0: 1 and 2: 0), the team was in the second round in a group with Senegal , who had participated in the World Cup for the first time four years earlier, Zambia, the Republic of the Congo , Mali and Liberia drawn. Togo lost their first game in Zambia, but not a game after that and ended up with two points ahead of Senegal. The qualification was only made perfect on the last day of the match with a 3-2 win in the Republic of the Congo.
In Germany, the team that had been trained by German Otto Pfister since February 2006 was drawn into a group with the former mandate power of France , Switzerland and South Korea . In the first World Cup game in their history, they lost 2-1 to South Korea. Mohamed Kader scored the first World Cup goal for Togo in the 33rd minute with the meanwhile 1-0. Immediately after captain Jean-Paul Abalo received the yellow-red card in the 53rd minute , South Korea equalized and a little later scored the winning goal, with South Korea winning a World Cup game abroad for the first time. The second game against Switzerland was also lost, this time with 0: 2. With this result, the last game against France ended, with Togo being the bottom of the group, leaving the World Cup for at least 16 years. Shortly after the World Cup, Pfister's involvement in Togo ended after only six games.
2010 in South Africa
In qualifying for the first World Cup in Africa, Togo should play against Zambia, Swaziland and Eritrea in the second round . Eritrea withdrew, however, so that only four games were due. Since Togo only won their home games but lost away, while Zambia drew goalless in Swaziland, Zambia finished first and Togo only 2. This was enough to make it through to the third round as one of the best runners-up in the group. In this, Togo took third place behind Cameroon, which qualified for the World Cup, and Gabon, but ahead of Morocco with two wins, two draws and two defeats, and was eliminated.
2014 in Brazil
The qualification for the second World Cup in Brazil was again unsuccessful. In the first round Guinea-Bissau was knocked out 1-1 and 1-0, but in the group stage they only finished last behind Cameroon, Libya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Only the last meaningless game against the Democratic Republic of the Congo was won. Togo's original 2-0 win in their fourth game against Cameroon was converted by FIFA into a 3-0 win for Cameroon on June 9, 2013, as Togo had used an ineligible player in Alaixys Romao .
2018 in Russia
In the qualification , the team only had to intervene in the second round, which was held in November 2015. Opponent was Uganda , against which both games were lost. Togo was the first former African World Cup participant to be eliminated.
