Tōkyō Hōsō Holdings ( Japanese 東京 放送 ホ ー ル デ ィ ン グ ス , English Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, Inc. ) is a Japanese media company based in Tokyo .

The core of the group is the television company TBS TV ( 株式会社 TBS テ レ ビ , Kabushiki-gaisha TBS Terebi , English Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. ) with the television station of the same name. This is the leading station of the news network Japan News Network (JNN), which supplies a total of 28 television stations across Japan with a news program. TBS Radio & Communications ( 株式会社 TBS ラ ジ オ & コ ミ ュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ン ズ , Kabushiki-gaisha KBS Rajio & Komyunikēshonzu ) operates the TBS radio station for the greater Tokyo area and is the lead broadcaster of the Japan Radio Network (JRN), to which 34 radio stations belong.

The TBS production Takeshi's Castle , a game show, was translated into several languages ​​and broadcast in over 15 countries, including Indonesia ( RCTI , TPI ), Germany ( Sport1 , RTL II ), Spain ( Cuatro TV ) and the USA ( Spike TV ).

The group also has a network of radio stations and the Mainichi Shinbun daily newspaper .

The main office and studio are located in Minato , Tokyo. The company also owns the Midoriyama Studio in Aoba-ku , Yokohama, and two branches in Kita-ku , Osaka and Naka-ku , Nagoya .

history

TBS was founded in May 1951 as Radio Tōkyō ( 株式会社 ラ ジ オ 東京 , KRT) in Chiyoda-ku in Tokyo. From December 25 of the same year, the radio program was broadcast at 1130 kHz and 50 kW. In July 1953 the frequency was changed to 950 kHz.

In April 1955 the analogue broadcast of the television station JOKR-TV on channel 6 from Minato-ku in Tokyo began. On November 29, 1960, the company was renamed Tōkyō Hōsō ( 株式会社 東京 放送 , English Tokyo Broadcasting System ) and the office and studio moved to Akasaka. From 1971 onwards 100 kW was used. On November 23, 1978 the frequency of the transmitter was changed again to 954 kHz.

In 1994 a new head office was completed, which is also called Big Hat ( ビ ッ グ ハ ッ ト ). On 21 March 2000 KK TBS Radio & Communications (were 株式会社ティ·ビー·エス·ラジオ·アンド·コミュニケーションズ/ 株式会社TBSラジオ&コミュニケーションズ), KK TBS Entertainment ( 株式会社ティ·ビー·エス·エンタテインメント) and KK TBS Sports ( 株式会社 テ ィ ・ ビ ー ・ エ ス ・ ス ポ ー ツ ) founded. The next day KK TBS Live followed ( 株式会社 テ ィ ・ ビ ー ・ エ ス ・ ラ イ ブ ). On October 1, 2001, all radio stations were outsourced to TBS Radio & Communications.

In November 1998, KK Japan Digital Communications ( 株式会社 ジ ャ パ ン ・ デ ジ タ ル ・ コ ミ ュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ン ズ ) was founded, which in June 2000 was renamed KK BS-i ( 株式会社 ビ ー エ ス ・ ア イ ) and broadcasted on December 1 of the same year with the satellite radio and television programs started. On September 30, 2005, satellite radio operations were discontinued and on April 1, 2009 the company renamed itself KK BS-TBS ( 株式会社 BS-TBS) after its satellite television station . The BS-TBS program partly deviates from the terrestrial content of TBS.

Rakuten bought approximately 15% of the shares in TBS in 2005.

On April 1, 2009, the Tōkyō Hōsō was transformed into today's holding company.
