Geographical location

Tolmin is a place in Primorska , which is the westernmost part of Slovenia on the border with Italy . Located on the southern edge of the Julian Alps , the small town on the middle course of the Soča represents the traffic junction on the one hand on the connecting road between Kranjska Gora and Nova Gorica , on the other hand the starting point of the traffic route to Škofja Loka and the road to Idrija and Logatec . Starting from the village, which is slightly elevated above the Soča Valley, upstream you reach the municipality of Kobarid , 16 km away , and downstream after 41 km, the town of Nova Gorica. There are still 87 kilometers of road to the Slovenian capital Ljubljana to the east . To the north of the city lies the Triglav National Park , which also includes the Tolmin Gorge .

history

In 1713, taxes that were felt to be too high sparked the Tolmein peasant uprising , which is reflected in today's coat of arms.

Anton Haus, from Windischgraz , married to Maria Grollnigg, was mayor of Tolmin around 1830. He was the grandfather of the only Austrian Grand Admiral Anton Haus .

The historical landscape is determined by the Soča, on the banks of which a sad chapter in world history was written in the twelve battles of the Isonzo during the First World War . The German war cemetery in Tolmin also commemorates this.

As part of the Austrian coastal region , Tolmin belonged to Italy from 1919 to 1945, then to Yugoslavia .

Cultural asset

The Javorca Holy Spirit Church east of the Isonzo Valley is a memorial to the First World War. It is considered the only Art Nouveau church in Slovenia.

The Patriarchs of Aquileia built a castle on the isolated mountain cone Kozlov rob (426 m), just to the north-west behind the city, where a prehistoric castle complex was found, of which only the remains can be seen today. A historical path connects the valley with the summit.

Furthermore, the Metalcamp (from 2013 Metaldays ), Punk Rock Holiday and the OverJam Festival are held every summer .
