Tomás León

Tomás León Ortega (born December 21, 1826 in Mexico City , † March 18, 1893 ibid) was a Mexican composer and pianist .

Life

As a child, León had piano lessons from his mother and was later a student of the organist José María Oviedo . At the age of fourteen he was organist at the Church of San Felipe Neri . In 1854 he was a member of the jury alongside Agustín Balderas and José Antonio Gómez , which decided on the tender for the composition of the Mexican national anthem (text: Francisco González Bocanegra ).

After performing at the Dutch court in 1854, León gained an international reputation as a pianist. In addition to the works of Bach , Beethoven and Haydn , his repertoire also included the piano arrangements of operas by Rossini and Verdi , which were popular at the time, and the revolutionary works of Chopin . In 1856 he performed with the pianist Oscar Pfeifer with his imagination on themes from the opera Ernani . Other of his musical partners were the violinists Frantz Jehin-Prume and José White Lafitte .

In 1866 León was a founding member of the Sociedad Filarmónica and became a teacher at its conservatory. In 1881 he received a prize from the City of Mexico for his composition Flores Mexicana . In 1993, the Centro Nacional de Inverstigación, Documentación e Información Musical "Carlos Chavéz" published a facsimile edition of his piano works.
