Tom Van Avermaet

Tom Van Avermaet (born July 22, 1982 ) is a Belgian film director , film producer and screenwriter who was nominated for an Oscar in 2013 and specializes in short films.

Career

Van Avermaet graduated from RITS film school. During his final year of study in 2006, from which he graduated with honors, he produced his first short film, Dreamtime - Droomtijd , which he directed, wrote the script, designed the set and took on the role of producer. The film was shown at national and international festivals and won numerous awards. Van Avermaet then worked as a set decorator for the short film Zonder jou .

For his first professional short film Death of a Shadow from 2012, in which Matthias Schoenaerts played among others , he and his colleague Ellen De Waele received a nomination in the category Best Short Film at the 2013 Academy Awards . Van Avermaet wrote the script, directed and worked as a producer for this film.

Van Avermaet stated that in all of his work he was influenced by the great surrealists of the international world of cinema such as Guillermo del Toro , Jean-Pierre Jeunet , Terry Gilliam , Tim Burton , Stanley Kubrick and Raoul Servais . Furthermore, fantasy stories and comics would make a not insignificant contribution to his films.
