Thomas "Tommy" Byrne (born May 6, 1958 in Drogheda ) is a former Irish racing driver .

Career

Tommy Byrne made a meteoric rise in motorsport at a young age. Hardly out of Formula Ford - in 1981 he drove in this racing series - he became British Formula 3 champion in 1982 and made it to Formula 1 in the same year .

For Teddy Yip's Theodore team , he qualified at five Grand Prix events. At the Austrian Grand Prix he made his debut in the Theodore TY02 - Cosworth . Byrne started the race from 26th and last place on the grid and had to retire after a spin. He contested his second Grand Prix at the end of the year at the Las Vegas Grand Prix at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix Circuit , where he had to give up again after a driving error that resulted in a ride.

As quickly as Byrne got into Formula 1, he was gone again quickly. In 1983 he had a brief stint in Formula 3, which was a step backwards for the ambitious Byrne. In the absence of sponsorship money, a return to Formula 1 was out of the question. Byrne therefore went to the USA

From 1986 to 1992 he drove in the Indy Lights series every season . In 55 starts he was able to record 10 wins. He is the second in the record lists of the racing series. In 1988 (behind Jon Beekhuis ) and 1989 (behind Mike Groff ) he was second overall. When Byrne retired in 1992, astonishingly, he hadn't contested a single champ car race.

Byrne now lives in Florida and works as a driving instructor and instructor at Honda and Acura . In 2008 his book Crashed and Byrned: The Greatest Racing Driver You Never Saw was published .
