The Tongji University ( Chinese 同濟大學 / 同济大学 , Pinyin Tóngjì Dàxué ) is a university in the People's Republic of China . As a priority university, it is directly subordinate to the Chinese Ministry of Education and is one of 33 universities that are to be built into world-famous universities according to the state education program "Project 985". The university is particularly known for engineering, economics and architecture. The School of Economics and Management (Tongji SEM) is three times accredited ( AMBA , AACSB and EQUIS ) and thus has the so-called " Triple Crown ". Tongji University was founded in 1907 by the German government together with German doctors in Shanghai.
Founding history
The forerunner of Tongji University was the "German Medical School for Chinese in Shanghai". It was founded in 1907 by the German government as the first major foreign cultural policy project. The German Consul General in Shanghai, Wilhelm Knappe , and the Ministerial Director in the Prussian Ministry of Education, Friedrich Althoff , were particularly committed to this . They worked together with the German doctors Erich Paulun , Oscar von Schab and Paul Krieg , who ran a hospital for the Chinese, the Tung-Chee Hospital (Tongji-Hospital), built on Paulun's initiative in Shanghai. This served as a teaching hospital from October 1909, but was run independently of the medical school.
In 1912 the German government added the "German Engineering School for Chinese in Shanghai" to the medical school with a training workshop. She was supported to a much greater extent than at the medical school by German companies interested in the Chinese market, including Krupp, Thyssen, Siemens, Bayer, BASF and Deutsche Bank. A language school prepared the Chinese students for German-language specialist studies.
In 1917 the "German School of Medicine and Engineering for Chinese in Shanghai" was closed by the French colonial power. However, it was temporarily continued in other buildings with Chinese help and, after the Chinese government had recognized it as a university in 1923, reopened as the Chinese Tongji University in 1924. Their technical equipment was once again donated by German industry, and German lecturers continued to give specialist instruction in German. This laid the foundations for a German-Chinese collaboration that is still maintained today at Tongji University. For this purpose, a Chinese-German university college was founded in 1998 to set a prime example of the exchange of knowledge between China and Germany.
University
The number of all apprentices and trainees is around 54,000. This is to become 22,000 Bachelor, 11,000 Master and 3,000 PhDs. There are currently over 4,800 lecturers and research staff at the university, including 2,400 full and associate professors. Of these, 300 PhD supervisors and 13 members each from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering.
The university has 15 state research institutions with specialty laboratories at national, provincial and ministerial levels as well as research institutions for engineering. In addition, four clinics and three secondary schools are attached to the university.

The campuses
The teaching and research facilities are spread over two campuses.

The connection is via the Tongji University metro station on line 10.
Outside the city center, in the Jiading District , is the Jiading Campus. Engineering courses and research institutions are mainly concentrated on the spacious grounds. Among other things, there is a Maglev test track on the site.
The connection is via the Shanghai Automobile City metro station on line 11.
There is also an hourly shuttle bus service between the campuses. The journey time is between one and two hours, depending on the traffic situation.
