The Tongue River is a 426-kilometer-long right tributary of the Yellowstone River in the US states of Montana and Wyoming .
The Tongue River has its headwaters in the Bighorn Mountains in central Wyoming . It arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, the North Tongue River and South Tongue River in the Bighorn National Forest . It initially flows east past Dayton and Ranchester . About 15 km north of Sheridan it turns northeast and after 15 km crosses the border with Montana. It is dammed up to the Tongue River Reservoir and forms the eastern border of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation below Birney . At the city of Miles City it finally flows into the Yellowstone River.
