Anton "Toni" Ulmen (born January 25, 1906 in Düsseldorf ; † November 4, 1976 there ) was a German motorcycle and automobile racing driver . From 1949 to 1952 he was four times German sports car and Formula 2 champion.

Life

Craftsman, businessman and racing driver

After finishing school, Toni Ulmen did an apprenticeship as a machinist in the Hasenclever motorcycle workshop. He then founded the Ulmen brothers together with his brother Andreas, which took over the representation of Opel in Düsseldorf before the Second World War . His other brother was a driving instructor.

Toni Ulmen's motorsport career began in 1925 on the Grand Tour of Germany on a 250cc Velocette . Two years later, on June 18, 1927, he won - also on a Velocette - at the first Eifel race , the opening race of the Nürburgring, the 350 class, in which the entire 28.265 km distance had to be covered five times. Ulmen drove the 141.5 km in 1: 40: 51.0 hours or with an average of 84.0 km / h. In 1929 he won the 350cc race of the Eilenriederennens in Hanover and from 1930 Toni Ulmen was a works driver at NSU .

The time after the Second World War

After 1946 Ulmen drove car races and achieved second place in a BMW 328 in the Karlsruhe triangle race. In 1947 he was named the best sports car driver of the year.

In 1949 he won nine races, including the Solitude race near Stuttgart and the Grenzlandring . He took second place seven times. He became German champion for Formula 2 racing cars (also in 1950 and 1952). In 1950 he competed at the first German Grand Prix after the Second World War on the Nürburgring and finished fourth with his private Veritas (an RS with free-standing wheels). On the Grenzlandring he was able to place in the top three in 1950 and 1951. In 1951 he became German champion for sports cars up to 2 liters.

In 1952 , Ulmen took part as a private driver with his Veritas in two races for the automobile world championship , which was held this year as well as in 1953 with Formula 2 cars. He started at the Swiss Grand Prix in Bremgarten , where he was canceled due to fuel loss, and at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, in which he finished eighth despite his car, which was poorly performing in comparison to the competition. In the same year, after 1949, he again won the Formula 2 race on the Grenzlandring.

During training for the race at the Sachsenring in 1952, Ulmen had an accident on a wet track, with his car - known as "grandmother" because of its age - being badly damaged; but he did not suffer any serious injuries himself. The cause of the accident was probably a technical defect. After that it only started occasionally.

After the racing career

After his active career as a racing driver, he promoted the next generation as president of the DMV . Federal President Theodor Heuss honored Toni Ulmen for his success in motorsport with the Silver Laurel Leaf , the highest national award for an athlete in Germany.

On January 1, 1954, he founded the later Toni Ulmen car dealership and initially sold NSU motorcycles and the Goggomobil , then Auto-Union vehicles and, for a short time, Fiat . The company has represented Citroën since 1962 . Toni Ulmen was managing director until 1970.

Private

Toni Ulmen was married twice. From his first marriage to Wilhelmine, née Theunissen, he had a son who succeeded him in the company management in 1970. The car dealership is now run by the grandson.
