Anthony "Tony" Hawksworth (born January 15, 1938 in Sheffield ) is a former English football goalkeeper . In his short professional career he was mostly only a substitute at Manchester United and only came to a league assignment in the championship season 1956/57.

Athletic career

Born in Sheffield, Hawksworth grew up in the village of Dungworth west of the city, and as a young goalkeeper he was used in English student and youth selections. At Manchester United he was part of the youth team for many years alongside players such as Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton and he won the FA Youth Cup three times in a row between 1954 and 1956 .

In the senior division, he had only played three games before making his debut in the first team. On October 27, 1956, he represented the injured goalkeeper Ray Wood in the 2-2 away game against Blackpool FC . It was Hawksworth's only assignment in the professional team of "United". At the time he was doing his compulsory service at Catterick and he was only available to Manchester United on weekends. A few weeks after the Blackpool game, his superior in the army tried to convince him to play for the regiment's team - this Hawksworth allegedly even threatened to be transferred to Benghazi . Since Hawksworth wanted to pursue his United career, he turned to coach Matt Busby , who eventually recommended the army team to him. In 1958 Hawksworth was now stationed with the Royal Tank Regiment in Germany. After his teammates from Manchester United had an accident in Munich, he was allowed to leave his regiment and two weeks later visit his former teammates, arriving in Munich on the night Duncan Edwards died of his injuries.

In December 1958, Hawksworth moved to the non-league club Bedford Town , which was then considered the best club outside of the Football League . He won there in the 1958/59 season the title in the Southern League , with Hereford United could be defeated 2-1 in the play-off game between the Northwest and Southeast Divisions Hereford United . Hawksworth stayed in Bedford for seven years and the services he earned there were recognized at the end with a farewell game. He then moved again to Rushden Town , a predecessor club of Rushden & Diamonds , and let his active career end there.

After leaving the soccer business, he worked for a candy company and then for British Gas until he retired in 1995 .
