Toots Mondello (* 14. August 1911 in Boston as Nuncio F. Mondello ; † 15. November 1992 in New York City ) was an American jazz - saxophonist of Swing .

Life

Toots Mondello began his career at the age of 14 in Lew Conrad's local band; In 1927 he played in the territory band of times Hallett , where he remained until the 1933rd In addition, he worked a. a. with Roger Wolfe Kahn , Irving Aaronsons Commanders , Joe Haymes and Buddy Rogers . 1934/35 he played in the Benny Goodman Orchestra; he left the band in July 1935 shortly before their legendary Palomar performance. He was also a busy studio musician; he worked on recordings a. a. by Chick Bullock , Bunny Berigan , Miff Mole , Claude Thornhill , Larry Clinton , Billie Holiday , Teddy Wilson , Bert Shefter , Louis Armstrong (1938–39), Lionel Hampton , Woody Herman (1944) and the Metronome All-Stars .

In 1937 and 1939 he recorded under his own name, in two sessions with a big band , one with a nonet and one with a trio. After his military service in World War II, Mondello continued his activity as a studio musician. a. for recordings of Pearl Bailey , Tony Bennett / Ralph Burns , Billy Butterfield , Charlie Parker , Toots Thielemans and Sarah Vaughan , and played in the television studio bands of Kate Smith, Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle. He remained active until the 1970s; In 1967 he made another album with Benny Goodman.
