Torrance is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 147,027 inhabitants (as of 2012 ). The city is bordered by Lawndale and Gardena to the north, Los Angeles to the east, and Rolling Hills Estates and Palos Verdes Estates to the south . Redondo Beach is to the west , but the urban area also includes a small stretch of beach between Redondo Beach and Malaga Cove.

The city is traversed by California State Route 1 , also known as the Pacific Coast Highway .

history

The city was named after the building contractor Jared Sydney Torrance , who in 1900 bought a piece of land in the area south of Los Angeles that used to belong to a Spanish colony in order to build a new industrial and residential area on it. He hired the architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to plan the new city. In 1912 the newly founded city was called Torrance.
