Torrance is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 147,027 inhabitants (as of 2012 ). The city is bordered by Lawndale and Gardena to the north, Los Angeles to the east, and Rolling Hills Estates and Palos Verdes Estates to the south . Redondo Beach is to the west , but the urban area also includes a small stretch of beach between Redondo Beach and Malaga Cove.
The city is traversed by California State Route 1 , also known as the Pacific Coast Highway .
history
The city was named after the building contractor Jared Sydney Torrance , who in 1900 bought a piece of land in the area south of Los Angeles that used to belong to a Spanish colony in order to build a new industrial and residential area on it. He hired the architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to plan the new city. In 1912 the newly founded city was called Torrance.

The Del Amo Fashion Center, one of the largest shopping malls in the United States, is located in Torrance . Previously, the area around Torrance with oil wells and drilling rigs dotted, today there are a little less, but there is still the former ExxonMobil - refinery north of the city, which the gasoline supply a large part of Southern California ensured and since 2016 the independent refiner PBF Energy belongs . Furthermore, the headquarters of Toyota Motor Sales, USA and American Honda Motor are located in Torrance, as well as the machine manufacturer Rock-Ola and the headquarters of the Sunrider Corporation. Toyota announced the move to its new US headquarters in Plano, Texas in 2014. There are also several automotive suppliers, clothing manufacturers and a plant for the production of Blu-ray discs and DVDs for the electronics company Panasonic . The helicopter manufacturer Robinson Helicopter is based at the local airport ( Zamperini Field, named after Louis Zamperini ) .
Others
The city is known to fans of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its high school . This is where the exterior shots for the scenes that take place at the high school in the fictional city of Sunnydale were filmed . The house in which Buffy lives, as well as numerous other locations in the series, are in the urban area of Torrance.
