The Towel Day (dt. Towel Day ) is a day of remembrance for the British author Douglas Adams . Towel Day has been taking place on May 25th every year since 2001.

date

When selecting the date, no particular historical date played a role. Rather, it was a compromise between the desire to mark Remembrance Day as soon as possible after Douglas Adams' death and the need to have enough lead time to get the news around the world. Since then, May 25 has established itself as a day of remembrance. Other dates that have a meaning in relation to Douglas Adams are February 11th (the 42nd day of the year), his birthday (March 11th) and the anniversary of his death (May 11th). These were discussed as the new dates for Towel Day in 2002, but not accepted.

regional customs

On this day, fans of the writer carry a towel with them or wrap it around their head as a turban. This is reminiscent of the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , or the films and series of the same name, in which a towel is described as "pretty much the most useful" thing you can take with you when traveling across the galaxy . One of the main characters, Ford Prefect, therefore always carries one with him.

Several media around the world mention Towel Day. These include the Norwegian daily Aftenposten , the Norwegian television news program NRK Nyheter and the National Public Radio Los Angeles .

In 2010, the day was declared on Volt broadcast in Canada . In Ecuador , the BBC subsidiary Radio City interviewed one of the organizers of Towel Day Toronto . In the UK , Planet Rock radio station brought the day as the theme of the day in 2011. Siren FM brought Dean Wilkinson & the Importance of International Towel Day .

In 2012, people in at least 39 countries celebrated Remembrance Day. In January 2012, the Huffington Post listed Towel Day as one of ten cult literary traditions. The Washington Post noted that the same day Geek Pride Day and a little-recognized Star Wars Day had little chance of spreading because of towel day . The day was celebrated with a reading in the Hamburg planetarium , there was a discount if you brought your own towel. On this day in Bangalore , India, you can get a free drink in many bars and boutiques if you have a towel with you.

Geocachers often use the day as an opportunity to meet at events with towels, e.g. B. 2011 on the market square in Aachen, 2013 in Bochum and Hamburg's Rathausmarkt, to name just a few. In 2018, 15 geocaching events were organized in six countries.

The Literary Platform organized an animation contest to mark the eleventh anniversary of Anniversary, in which a rare shot of Douglas Adams describing the making of the galactic travel guide was animated.
