Traffic with the Devil is an American documentary - short film from 1946 by Gunther von Fritsch (here Attribution as "Gunther V. Fritsch") of 1947 for an Oscar nominee. The film focuses on traffic problems in Los Angeles , California , described and experienced by Sgt. Charles Reineke, a traffic expert with the Los Angeles Police Department.

content

Police Sergeant Charles Reineke is on his motorcycle on the streets of Los Angeles. The film reflects the growing volume of traffic in the city that the police have to deal with. The behavior in traffic, which has changed in contrast to earlier, is also discussed. The cars are moving faster, the people are impatient, and not only the pedestrians are sometimes met aggressively. The number of accidents is not only increasing, they are also leading to ever greater damage and consequently to higher costs for repairing damaged cars or to total losses. The worst, however, is that there are more and more traffic casualties.

In the United States in 1946 up to 100 people died in road accidents every day, and up to 2,500 in road accidents every day. Los Angeles contributes significantly to these numbers with its statistics. Reineke points out that with the advent of automobiles, people were given a sense of freedom and progress. This has led to an attitude of "I versus the world" among some drivers, where police officers see them as enemies of their freedom. They also behaved in the same way towards other road users whom they would often consider to be a hindrance. Almost everyone thinks they are the better driver and as soon as something happens, blame the other driver. Many are also unable to take personal responsibility for what they do behind the wheel and are looking for excuses.

production

The film premiered in the United States on August 31, 1946. The opening credits read: “ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer presents the Theater of Life Fact film, produced in cooperation with The Associated Press . Filmed in collaboration with The Los Angeles Police Dept. The National Safety Council . Seen through the eyes of Police Sgt. Charles Reineke and told about him too. "
