Transfusion incidents can occur during a blood transfusion . There are basically three groups:

  • The febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reaction is an allergic reaction as a result of antibodies against white blood cells . Symptoms would be: fever , chills , itching , urticaria , less often drop in blood pressure and shortness of breath.
  • The hemolytic incident is usually an AB0 intolerance. This type of transfusion incident always occurs due to human error (see bedside test ). Symptoms that can occur are: General symptoms of microcirculation disorders (pain in the lumbar region, behind the sternum and in the long bones ), shock , consumption coagulopathy and acute kidney failure .
  • The bacterial or pyrogenic reaction is caused by contaminated blood or a contaminated transfusion system. Symptoms here: shock possibly after a few ml, often hemolysis , fever and possibly septic late damage.
