Travarica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Travarica is a herbal brandy from Croatia . It is based on grape marc , which is why it is occasionally translated into German as "herbal grappa " on the menu of Croatian restaurants . Due to the base of the marc, Travarica is a subspecies of Rakija . The flavoring is basically done by maceration , but occasionally there is also a subsequent addition of aroma.

As a herbal brandy, Travarica is also sometimes referred to as Croatian gin . It is not only its character as a fruit brandy that distinguishes it from gin, but also the choice of herbs. Instead of juniper in gin, Travarica almost always contains straw flower , which enjoys a reputation as a medicinal plant in the Mediterranean region. Depending on the family recipe, there are also a large number of other herbs or spices, for example sage , rosemary , fennel , walnut leaves or soft cherries .
