Location of Treichville

Treichville is a city in the Abidjan district in the south of the Ivory Coast in West Africa .

Geographical location

Treichville is located together with Marcory , Koumassi and Port-Bouët on an island off the mainland , which is separated from the Plateau , Yopougon and Cocody by the Ébrié lagoon . From here a rail and road bridge leads to Plateau. Treichville covers an area of 12 km² and, according to the 1998 national election commission, had 120,526 inhabitants.

history

The city takes its name from the French explorer Marcel Treich-Laplène , who was exploring Grand-Bassam and the interior of the Ivory Coast from 1883 . The city was founded in 1886 as one of the oldest residential areas in Abidjan . As early as 1956 it was raised to the status of a sub-municipal and in 1980 to that of an independent municipality. As part of the decentralization in 2002, the city became independent (a commune ). Mayor for the period 2001 to 2005 was François Albert Anichia from the PDCI-RDA.

economy

In addition to the port and the industry around it, Treicheville is a trading center for the residents of the metropolis. An immense range of shops and stores offers an enormous variety of products. There are also many restaurants, cafés and - at night - a diverse nightlife with all its charms and dangers. A popular meeting point with the locals is the carrefour France-Amérique intersection . But none of this can hide the fact that Treichville is now just a reflection of itself and a poor African city. Here is the real heart of the pulsating city of Abidjan.

traffic

Abidjan free port is located here . In addition to the free port, there is also the station of the Abidjan-Niger railway to the north of the country and Burkina Faso to Ouagadougou .
