Guinea pig trichomoniasis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The trichomoniasis is a rather rare guinea pig disease caused by protozoa of the family of trichomoniasis - especially Tritrichomonas caviae , more rarely Entamaoeba muris caused. The protozoa also live as saprophytes in the intestines of healthy guinea pigs. Only a strong increase leads to intestinal inflammation ( enteritis ) with diarrhea. Emaciation occurs, and fatalities can occur in young animals. As with coccidiosis , poor hygiene leads to the occurrence of the disease.

The diagnosis is made on the basis of a microscopic examination of a fecal swab. Metronidazole or dimetridazole are suitable for treatment .
