Trimerophyton is a fossil plant genus that is known from the Devonian and iscounted amongthe basal vascular plants .

No whole plants are known. The rungs of the known fossils have a diameter of around one centimeter and consist of numerous, helically arranged side branches. The primary and secondary branches are triple bifurcated (trichotomous), the other branches are then simply bifurcated (dichotomous). At the terminal branches there are erect sporangia in groups of three.

In Trimerophyton there is tissue that is interpreted as a phloem . This would make it one of the oldest phloem finds.

Possibly the fossils known as Trimerophyton are branches of Pertica .

Finds of Trimerophyton come mainly from the Gaspé region in Canada and are temporally assigned to the Devonian , which lasted from 416 to 359 million years ago.

Botanical history

The type species Trimerophyton robustius was originally described by JW Dawson in 1859 as Psilophyton robustius . In 1956 it was placed in its own genre.
