Truman Seymour

Truman Seymour (born September 24, 1824 in Burlington , Vermont , † October 30, 1891 in Florence , Italy ) was a general in the US Army in the Civil War .

He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point , New York in 1846. He then fought in the artillery in the Mexican War and against the Seminoles in Florida .

At the beginning of the Civil War, Seymour was a captain at Fort Sumter , which became the scene of the war's first fighting. After a few months in the Washington, DC Defense Ring, he was promoted to volunteer brigadier general in April 1862 . At the same time Seymour was appointed commander of the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Division of the V Corps of the Potomac Army , which he led during the Peninsula Campaign . In the battles on South Mountain and Antietam he led the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Division in the III. Corps of the same army.

In late 1862, Seymour was transferred to the Department of the South, where he led a division on Morris Island in the fighting for the port of Charleston , South Carolina . During the second attack on Battery Wagner on July 18, 1863, he was wounded. Seymour led the Union troops in the fighting in Florida in 1864, for example at the Battle of Olustee . During the Battle of the Wilderness he again led a brigade in the Potomac Army, the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Division in VI. Corps. Seymour was captured there by the Confederates , but exchanged a little later. Now he was given command of the 3rd Division in the VI. Corps he led in the Shenandoah campaign , off Petersburg and in the Appomattox campaign .

After the war he remained in the regular army until 1876 and later settled in Florence, Italy, where he died on October 30, 1891.
