Tsunekazu Takeda ( Japanese 武田 恒 和 ; Takeda Tsunekazu ; born November 1, 1947 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a former Japanese show jumper and current sports official. He is a great-grandson of Emperor Meiji . He has been President of the Japanese Olympic Committee since 2001 and during this time he brought the 2020 Summer Olympics to Tokyo. On March 19, 2019, he announced that he would step down as JOC President and member of the International Olympic Committee in June 2019.

General

Tsunekazu Takeda studied law at Keiō University with a focus on political science. Like his father, he later became a university lecturer.

Athletic career

Takeda was a show jumper and participated in the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1972 he finished 42nd in the individual ranking with his horse Josephine . With the team he reached 16th place. In 1976 he rode the horse Fink . In the individual he was 39th, with the team he finished 13th.

After his active career, he became the trainer of the Japanese show jumping team. In this role he was at the 1984 , 1988 and 1992 Summer Games .

Sports administration

Tsunekazu Takeda was Chef de Mission of the Japanese Olympic team at the 2002 Winter Games, 2004 Summer Games and 2010 Youth Games. He has been a member of the Japanese NOK since 1987 and has been its president since 2001. Since 2011 he has been Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia . From 1998 to 2002 he was Vice President of the World Equestrian Federation, Fédération Equestre Internationale . He has been honorary vice president since 2002. Since 2014 he has been Vice President of the Organizing Committee of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

IOC membership

In 2012 Tsunekazu Takeda was elected an IOC member. He is currently a member of the Commission for the Coordination of the 2018 Winter Olympics, the Coordination of the 2024 Summer Olympics and the Chairman of the Commission for Marketing.

Investigations

In January 2019, it became known that investigations had been initiated against Takeda in France for active corruption in the award of the 2020 Olympic Games to Tokyo. The focus is particularly on a suspicious payment of two million euros, in which Takeda is said to have been involved in the course of the application.
