The salmon-colored slime mold ( Tubifera ferruginosa ) is a slime mold from the Enteridiidae family .

features

Paler form with a clearly recognizable hypothallus
Group at a tree stump

The individual fructifications are cylindrical, rounded or slightly flattened to the side. They are up to five millimeters high and 0.2 to 0.4 millimeters in diameter. They are closely connected to form pseudo-ethers . These are flat to hemispherical in shape, with a diameter of 10 to 60, sometimes 100 millimeters. Individual rounded links protrude from the surface.

The membranous base ( hypothallus ) is whitish to pale brown in color. However, it will later be colored darker by the spores. It has a spongy structure and is often bulged. The shell ( peridia ) is preserved for a long time. It is thin and has a smooth, slightly shiny to iridescent surface. In the transmitted light it appears pale brown. The shell first tears at the apex and later opens up to the base.

A hair braid ( capillitium ) is usually not present. It is rare to find thin threads that have grown together with the wall. There are spores on them . The spores are brown in bulk, reddish-brown in transmitted light. They measure six to eight micrometers in diameter. There is a fine-meshed network on the surface, which is interrupted at the germ pore.

The plasmodium is initially whitish, but later orange-red to scarlet or deep pink. Before ripening, it is dark brown in color.

Similar species

Tubifera dictyoderma can be similar . This, however, forms large, crust-like fructifications from which the individual members do not emerge; the surface is smooth and resembles a honeycomb structure . In these there is also a hair-like central strand.

ecology

The slime mold is mainly found on dead coniferous wood. Flies of the species Epicypta testata lay their eggs in the plasmodium of the fungus. It lives as a larva and as a nymph in the fruiting bodies and contributes to the spread of the spores. The species is associated with the blood milk fungus ( Lycogala epidendrum ), Physarum nutans , Arcyria obvelata , Hemitrichia serpula and several species of the genus Cribraria .

distribution

Tubifera ferruginosa is cosmopolitan .
