Tuimasy ( Bashkir and Russian Туймазы́ ) is a city in the Republic of Bashkortostan ( Russia ) with 66,836 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the southern foothills of the Urals , about 145 km west of the republic capital Ufa on the river Ussen in the river system of the Kama .

Tuimasy is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

The place was created 1910-1912 as a station settlement during the construction of the Simbirsk - Ufa railway line and was named after the nearby village (today Staryje Tuimasy , Old Tuimasy). The development took off significantly with the discovery of an oil deposit in 1937 when a workers' settlement was established. In 1960 Tuimasy received town charter.
