Tunç Hamarat

Tunç Hamarat (born December 1, 1946 in Istanbul ) is an Austrian chess player of Turkish descent. He is world champion in correspondence chess .

After studying physics in Ankara , he came to Vienna in 1972. Since 1994 he has had Austrian citizenship.

Correspondence chess

He has been playing correspondence chess since 1963. In 1997 the World Correspondence Chess Federation ( ICCF) awarded him the title of Grand Master in Correspondence Chess . At the 14th World Cup, he came in 4th place in 2002.

He won the 16th World Championship, which began in 1999 and ended in 2004, with 12 points from 16 games. He had previously achieved fifth place in the 24th and 33rd European Championships. According to his own statement, he has not yet lost a game with the white pieces in his correspondence chess career.

Close chess

Hamarat also achieved a considerable playing strength in close-range chess. Before 1972 he took part in the championship of Turkey three times. After moving to Austria, he played with the team of the Mödling chess club in the state league.

backgammon

Hamarat is also considered an excellent backgammon player. In 2003 he reached the semifinals of the Austrian national championship.

Private

Hamarat worked for an Austrian telecommunications provider. Besides chess, jazz music is another hobby.
