The gymnastics community Bornheim 1860 e. V. was founded on June 4, 1860. At that time, according to the association's statutes, the focus was on the physical training of men . Women in sportswear were not welcome at the time. The first gymnastics area was in the garden of the Zum Goldenen Löwen inn on Gelnhäuser Strasse (later the Kirchner School site on Berger Strasse ). The editor and communist Jakob Kutt, who lives in Bornheim , was the first to call for the gymnast to use a closed building . In 1864, the Golden Lion was demolished due to the construction of the Citizens' School (later the Kirchner School) and the gymnasium was relocated to the garden of the Pflug restaurant on the corner of Berger Strasse and Saalburgstrasse. In 1868 another relocation followed in the garden of the Zur Sonne tavern on Berger Strasse. On September 12, 1875, the first gymnasium was inaugurated on Buchwaldstrasse . The half-timbered house consisted of a gym and a club room. This property was available to the association until 1900. In 1895 the city of Frankfurt gave the association a new piece of land in Gronauer Strasse. On June 7, 1896, the second gym was inaugurated there. On April 22, 1933, the club became part of the coordination of sport during the Nazi era . The newly established Turner SA became part of the regular SA just a few months later .

The workers' sports club Freie Turnerschaft Bornheim , which had reached the finals of the German ATSB championship in 1921 , joined the Bornheim gymnastics community in 1933 and thus survived the “ Third Reich ”. During the Second World War , the gym on Gronauer Strasse was destroyed on January 29, 1944 in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main .

The first general meeting after the war took place on February 15, 1946 . The gym started again in the gym of the Kirchner School. The attempt to acquire the property of the destroyed gymnasium in Gronauer Strasse from the city of Frankfurt failed because the city's magistrate needed the property for the expansion of the Bornheim depot for the Frankfurt tram . As an alternative, the association acquired a piece of land between Berger Strasse and Falltorstrasse. A clubhouse was built there in 1950 and a bowling alley with a college building in 1954 . On February 10, 1957, the gym that still exists today was inaugurated there. On October 16, 1982, the gymnastics community revived the lark autumn . This name goes back to the time of viticulture in Bornheim, when the larks invaded in autumn and enriched the menu of the Bornheimers. 1981 was a turning point in the history of the club, which at the time was almost bankrupt . The number of members grew from then 500 to 19,860 in 2010. The number of sports offers rose from 20 in 1985 to 184 in 2010. Today the members come not only from the Bornheim district , but also from other districts and the surrounding area of Frankfurt. The establishment of the fitness studio in the bowling alley was a revolutionary innovation in 1992. Until then, this was exclusively the domain of private, commercial studio operators. In 2010, the association employed 250 trainers , 18 full-time employees and around 100 other volunteers . The association is a training company for the training occupation of sports and fitness clerk . In 2010, the association celebrated its 150th anniversary with guests of honor such as Yvonne Schröder , Roland Koch , Petra Roth , Steffi Jones and performances by Bodo Bach and Roy Hammer & die Pralinées . In 2012, the number of members increased by a total of 2,651 and the number of members of the fitness studio by approx. 600.

At the end of March 2019, the chairman of the association, Peter Völker, who has been in office since 1981, was confirmed in his office. In the meantime, the management structure has been reorganized, including full-time management with a division into the sports area and administration. The full-time management is controlled by a supervisory board without an operational function. In addition, a change in the chairmanship is planned.

In March 2020, all sports operations were suspended for the first time until further notice. The cause was the requirements of the federal government due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . As a result, workouts and challenges were offered on Instagram and Facebook and a virtual gym on the live stream or the club's media library . In mid-May, general sports operations and shortly afterwards the fitness studios were restarted in a restricted manner under a specially developed hygiene concept.

Fechenheim indoor garden pool

The indoor garden pool in Fechenheim was built in 1927 by the architect and university professor Martin Elsaesser for the workers in Fechenheim in order to make the incorporation to Frankfurt more interesting for the then still independent place . For the time, the indoor pool was a revolutionary social innovation. The operation of the former municipal indoor pool in Fechenheim with the associated sauna was taken over by TG Bornheim on May 1st, 2003. The sauna area was supplemented in 2009 by a log cabin sauna. A new steam sauna was also put into operation. As at the other two locations where saunas are operated, the Austrian entertainer and sauna master "Gery from Tyrol " was a guest in the sauna area of the indoor pool in Fechenheim for a few days . He offered special infusions such as crush ice infusion, thermal brine - salt infusion, honey infusion or salt / olive oil infusion. In 2013, 6587 members were registered for swimming and 1582 for the sauna.

Bornheim panorama pool

The Panoramabad on Bornheimer Hang with the attached sauna is also operated by the Bornheim gymnastics community on one day of the week and is only open to club members on this day.
