Tuudur Vettik

Tuudur Vettik (born January 4, 1898 in Uniküla, then Väike-Maarja parish , today Maidla parish in Ida-Viru district ; † May 20, 1982 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and choirmaster .

Life

Tuudur Vettik studied violin, composition (with Artur Kapp ) and music education at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ) from 1919 to 1926 . He then trained in composition from 1927 to 1932 with Mart Saar . From 1919 to 1940 he worked as a music teacher. Vettik established himself as one of the leading Estonian choir directors in just a few years. From 1940 to 1950 he was a lecturer at the Tallinn Conservatory, from 1947 professor. From 1940 to 1947 he headed the Conservatory's choral music department.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Tuudur Vettik was arrested in 1950. He was held in various detention centers before he was released in 1956. In 1968 he was officially rehabilitated.

After his release, Vettik worked from 1956 to 1962 as a lecturer in choral conducting at the Tallinn State Conservatory. His most famous students include Ants Üleoja and Roland Laasmäe .

Tuudur Vettik directed the great Estonian singing festivals in 1933, 1938, 1947, 1960 and 1969. At the age of 82 he again directed the 1980 singing festival.

He was one of the most prolific choral composers in Estonia. Vettik has also published numerous articles and books on choral singing.

Tuudur Vettik is buried in the Tallinn Forest Cemetery.
