Henriette Schulte

The "Emden" type , also known as the Emden class , was a general cargo ship type of the Emden Nordseewerke that could be used universally . It was built in over 20 units between 1951 and 1957.

history

The Archon Michael , built in 1951 as Reimar Edzard Fritzen

In the 1950s, the rapidly growing German economy created an increasing demand for raw materials. This included, among other things, the supply of ore to the steel works in the Ruhr area. In the beginning , ore imports were mainly transported with multi-purpose general cargo ships, which were suitable for both exported general cargo transports and for the import of bulk goods such as ore. Before the war, the North Sea Works in Emden had gained experience in the construction of ore freighters, which enabled the shipyard to construct a suitable ship design and to commission a large series of such ships. On August 9, 1951, the Emden shipyard delivered the type ship Henriette Schulte to the Schulte & Bruns shipping company . It was taken over by the Bernhard Schulte shipping company in 1956 and sold to Taiwan in 1960 . The ships of the series were used partly as tramp ships in the timber and coke trade, partly on the Europe-Great Lakes routes or in the Mediterranean-India service. By December 1957, around 20 new buildings of the "Emden" type with a load capacity of 10,000 tons had been built, the data of which differed slightly in later versions.

The shipyard received the majority of the orders from German shipping companies, but inquiries about the type of ship also came from abroad. In 1955, the shipyard delivered the new Karen Reed building to a shipping company in Norway . The ship type was initially expanded to include a variant enlarged to 10,800 tdw. The design later formed the basis for the construction of a significantly larger type with a load capacity of 15,000 tons. Overall, the “Emden” type had a significant share in the previously unattained production output of the North Sea Works.

technology

The ships, around 144 meters long and 17.60 meters wide on frames, had five holds with a bulk cargo volume of 16,765 m 3 . The strength of the hull necessary for the ore journey was achieved by a heavy construction with full floor walls on each frame. In addition, high tanks were provided between the hatches to improve the sea characteristics. The ships had a tank capacity of 2179 tonnes for any ballast travel. Main engines with around 3500 hp allowed a speed of around 13 knots . The basic design of the ships with superstructures located amidships and the conventional loading gear did not differ fundamentally from contemporary liner freighters .

The sinking of Melanie Schulte

The most famous ship of the series was the Melanie Schulte of the Emden shipping company Schulte & Bruns . It sank in 1952 just a few weeks after its commissioning for unknown reasons in the North Atlantic, with all 35 crew members perishing. In its hearing, the Maritime Administration in Hamburg assumed an overload of the hull due to unbalanced loading and bad weather as the likely cause.
