Tyrconnell (whiskey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tyrconnell is an Irish whiskey brand that has existed since 1876 and was taken over by Cooley Distillery in Riverstown in 1988 . It owes its name to a successful racehorse named Tyrconnell .

history

The Watt family moved to Londonderry , Northern Ireland , in 1762 . Andrew A. Watt bought the Waterside Distillery there in 1839, and the Coffey Still process was soon used there . In 1876, against all odds, one of Watts horses named Tyrconnell won a horse race. This is how the whiskey got its label . Before American prohibition , this whiskey was the most popular in the United States . The company had to close in 1925 for competition reasons. Tyrconnell reopened when Cooley bought the distillery in 1988. Tyrconnell has received multiple awards including a gold medal (2004) and two silver medals (2005, 2006) from the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).

sorts

Today the Tyrconnell whiskeys are distilled using the pot still method. Cooley experimented a little and, in addition to maturing in the usual bourbon barrels, created various finish whiskeys that are filled into other barrels again before bottling.
