The Yokohama Subway ( Japanese 横 浜 市 営 地下 鉄 , Yokohama-shiei chikatetsu , German: Yokohama City Subway ) is the subway system of the Japanese city of Yokohama . Construction of the first line began in 1963.

Line network

Line 1 and 3 ( Blue Line , ブ ル ー ラ イ ン )

Originally, two separate lines were planned, line 1 with the terminal stops Shonandai and Kannai and line 3 with the terminal stops Kannai and Azamino. Today the trains run continuously between Shonandai and Azamino. With a total length of 40.4 km, the two lines form the second longest subway route in Japan after the Ōedo line of the Toei subway in Tokyo . The track width is 1,435 mm ( standard gauge ) and the power supply of 750  V comes from a third rail . An extension of line 3 from the current Azamino terminus is planned. Completion is not expected before 2015.

Line 2

The project for the planned route from Kanagawa-Shinmachi to Byobugaura is currently stopped.

Line 4 ( Green Line , グ リ ー ン ラ イ ン )

Line 4 runs from Hiyoshi to Nakayama and forms the first part of the planned Yokohama ring line. It opened on March 30, 2008.

Minatomirai Line

The Minatomirai Line , opened in 2004, connects the main train station with Chinatown and runs through the Minato Mirai 21 urban development area . However, it is not operated by the Yokohama City Traffic Office like the other lines , but by the Yokohama Kōsoku Tetsudō . For this reason, it is generally not considered part of the Yokohama Subway, even though it runs entirely inside the tunnel.
