The überseequartier is a stop of the Hamburg Metro - U4 in the district of HafenCity . The station abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "UR", named after the Überseequartier .

history

For the development of HafenCity with a new subway line to be built, the groundbreaking ceremony was carried out on August 23, 2007 by Mayor Ole von Beust . The first work on the Überseequartier underground station, on the other hand, began in early 2007 using the open construction method. The sign entry of the VERA tunnel boring machine from HafenCity into the Jungfernstieg stop for the first tunnel took place on October 13, 2009, the second on December 3, 2010. In summer 2010, the interior work on the underground station began.

The U4 and its new stops were opened on November 29, 2012. The planning for this underground station was based on 35,000 passengers a day.

The underground station is 19.5 meters below ground level, i.e. 14 meters below sea level . The platform hall in west-east orientation and with a ceiling height of about 8 meters is 17.6 meters wide, of which 10.8 meters are accounted for by the central platform. Access is via two staircases on the west side and three on the east side. An elevator with an intermediate stop in the eastern mezzanine level leads to the center of the platform. The design, based on a design by the Darmstadt office “netzwerkarchitekten”, provides for the walls to be clad with blue, ceramic-coated glass tiles that become darker towards the bottom and are intended to be reminiscent of underwater worlds. Silver sheets on the ceiling are supposed to give the impression of a water surface.

Art installations

Ship model on the platform

As a permanent art installation , next to the escalators, there are angular loudspeakers next to each lamp, from which the sound of the sea and other maritime noises emanate, which is intended to acoustically reinforce the optical “underwater impression” of the wall cladding, which becomes darker with increasing depth.

As a permanent loan from the “ International Maritime Museum Hamburg ”, there is a model of the Queen Elizabeth 2 ( launched in 1967) in a showcase on the platform in a scale of 1: 100, which was built by Günther Nitz.
