Jardim Zoológico - until 1998 Sete Rios - is a subway station of the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located under Praça General Humberto Delgado and north of the Linha de Cintura railway in the municipality of São Domingos de Benfica . The neighboring stations of the train station are Laranjeiras and Praça de Espanha . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the Lisbon origin network. Together with the REFER station , which, unlike the subway station, bears the name Sete Rios , and the Rede Expressos bus terminal , the station represents an important transport hub in the Portuguese capital.

history

Today's Jardim Zoológico station , then still under the name Sete Rios , was opened by the Lisbon city administration and the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa on December 29, 1959. At the time, Sete Rios was one of the three terminal stations of the then only 6.5 kilometers small network. The branch from Sete Rios connected at Rotunda station with the branch coming from Entre Campos and then led to the inner-city terminus Restauradores .

João Falcão e Cunha was responsible for the design of the station , he designed the usual two 70 meter long and 4.20 meter wide side platforms, both of which led into a northern and a southern entrance hall, the latter not yet leading to the railway. Maria Keil was in turn responsible for the design, as was the case with most of Lisbon's subway stations. She used azulejos, the only motif of which was a small, brown quadrant with an alternating yellow, green or blue frame.

Sete Rios had the function of a terminus for almost thirty years, as the economy stagnated during the Portuguese colonial war and an expansion of the urban subway was not financially feasible. From October 1988, however, the metro trains continued from Sete Rios to Colégio Militar / Luz .

In the course of the expansion of the metro in the 1980s and 1990s, the connection of the subway with the suburban lines of the state railway company Caminhos-de-ferro Portugueses (CP) came to the fore, so that, among other things, this was taken as an opportunity to launch the U -Sete Rios train station to be completely renovated. The renovation, which was carried out under the direction of the architect Benoliel de Carvalho , included the construction of connecting corridors to the above-ground railway station and the extension of the platforms to 105 meters. The azulejos designed by Keil in the south hall were preserved, the station itself was completely redesigned by the artist Júlio Resende . Resende, who was inspired by his numerous trips to Brazil , designed numerous animals and plants for the platform walls based on the zoological garden right next to the train station . Since the official reopening on July 25, 1995, parrots, walruses, deer and zebras have been joining the waiting passengers. In 1998 the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa renamed numerous train stations, and since then the Sete Rios train station has been called Jardim Zoológico (Zoological Garden). The Caminhos-de-ferro Portugueses (CP) , which operated the above-ground suburban train station at the time , kept the name, so that both stations now have different names.

The station has not changed much since then. In the future it is planned to equip it with elevators. However, since the expansion of the existing lines is currently the main focus of the Lisbon Metro, the subsequent installation is currently not foreseeable in the short to medium term.
