The type designation of freight wagons is an international letter designation which contains the most important technical features of these railway wagons . This marking applies to all vehicles that are used in international freight transport .

This marking was developed by the UIC before 1960 , but was only introduced in general validity from 1964. From 1968 this marking had to be written on all freight wagons belonging to the UIC and OSJD members (railway companies, infrastructure operators, railway companies). From 1964 to January 1968, the UIC marking was implemented throughout Germany and has been continuously developed since then.

This type designation is generally called the UIC generic symbol and is made up of a “generic letter” (capitalized) and one or more “identification letters” (lowercase) and serves to identify the freight wagon characteristics, which is particularly important during loading and operation matters. The UIC generic symbol is written below the UIC wagon number and thus replaced the previously used markings.

Not all freight wagons in Europe received the UIC marking. So retained example, in Germany the few remaining Güterzugbegleitwagen and narrow gauge freight cars to their original generic name .

Generic letters

For the sake of completeness, the following table also contains the internationally standardized generic letters for passenger coaches (A to D, WL and WR), which are dealt with under the type designation system for coaches . Each type of freight wagon is assigned a type number, the first digit of which is the fifth digit of the 12-digit UIC wagon number .

* 11 In the version valid until 1979, a designated bogie wagons, aa was not included for classes E, F, G, H, T, U, Z.
* 12 In the version valid until 1979, the load limit of 40 t also applied here.
* 13 The code letter was not included in the original version from 1966 and was only introduced later.
* 14 At the DR , the definition was initially only "length under ... m", which was understood as length over buffers (LüP). Therefore, many wagons initially received an incorrect generic designation with the missing m .
* 15 In the original version from 1965, m was only intended for the categories E, G, I, K, O, R.
* 16 In the original version from 1965, mm was only intended for the categories K, O, R.
* 17 The code letter could be omitted from 1980, but in some cases it remained written for longer.
* 18 The code letter was introduced later than 1980.
* 19 Until 1979, both wagons with adjustable and sudden gravity unloading were designated with d .

National code letters

The two-digit code for the property feature was used as an identification number in the wagon number, the two-digit UIC country code has been used since 2005 . The country of origin of a vehicle is determined with the UIC country code.
