from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UNESCO chairs aim to create international networks for the exchange of knowledge in the area of responsibility of UNESCO .

General

As part of the UNITWIN program, UNESCO has recognized so-called UNESCO chairs since 1992on. With these chairs, UNESCO is pursuing several goals. On the one hand, the aims of UNESCO should be made known to universities and their concerns supported. Another goal is international networking, especially with universities in the southern hemisphere, and their integration into the international scientific community. In the past, UNESCO chairs have often distinguished themselves in one of the areas of responsibility of UNESCO or in cooperation and knowledge transfer with international partners. The network now consists of more than 700 chairs from various disciplines in 114 countries. There are currently twelve UNESCO chairs in Germany, six in Austria and eight in Switzerland (as of January 9, 2020).
