The USS Sangamon was an escort carrier of the US Navy in World War II . It was named after a river in the US state of Illinois .

In Kiel it was placed as a civilian tanker Esso Trenton . On October 22, 1940, the ship was bought by the US Navy for use as a fleet tanker and then renamed the USS Sangamon (AO-28) .

On July 15, 1943, after several reclassifications, she was finally designated as an escort aircraft carrier with the identification CVE-26. On February 11, 1948, the ship was decommissioned and sold to a civil company.
