The USS Von Steuben (SSBN-632) was a Lafayette-class nuclear-powered missile submarine (SSBN) of the United States Navy .

history

The Von Steuben was commissioned from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1961 and laid down there in 1962. It was named after the Prussian officer and US American general Freiherr Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben , who reorganized the Continental Army in the American War of Independence based on the German model. The launch took place after a little over a year, in September 1964 the boat was finally put into service with the United States Navy .

This was followed by the first test and training trips, on December 22nd the submarine shot down its first submarine-launched ballistic missile . From March 1965, the Von Steuben began their patrols as a deterrent . In 1968 she was relocated from Charleston , South Carolina to Rota , Spain . In the same year repairs were also due at Electric Boat . In 1970 their missile system was finally switched to the UGM-73 Poseidon , this again happened at EB. From then on, the boat operated from Charleston again.

On February 24, 1994 the Von Steuben was decommissioned and between 2000 and 2001 the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program was canceled.
