history
The West Virginia was commissioned in 1983 from General Dynamics and laid down in October 1987 at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton , Connecticut, which is part of GD . After two years construction was completed, SSBN-736 was launched and christened by Mrs. Robert C. Byrd. Another year later, after the final equipment and the shipyard test drives, in October 1990, the West Virginia was taken over into the fleet of the US Navy.
The home port was Kings Bay , Georgia, on the Atlantic coast from the start of the service .
In early 2011, the West Virginia will be overhauled at half-time at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard . Among other things, the reactor core is filled with new nuclear fuel.
