Uchi-deshi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Uchi-Deshi ( Japanese 内 弟子 , dt. "Inner pupil") was the house pupil of a Budo master.

The Uchi-Deshi lived in the master’s dōjō . He took care of the organization of the training and helped with household and office work. For this he received food, personal attention and received intensive and detailed training instruction from the master.

While the Soto-Deshi learned the technical aspects of a martial art, the Uchi-Deshi was initiated into the "inner" things. Only when the master was convinced of the seriousness of a student could he become an uchi-deshi. In contrast to Soto-Deshi it was hardly visible from the outside, but the true background of the martial art and the hidden elements of a form ( Kata ) were shown to him by the master. He later succeeded Master and continued on his way.
