Ulrich Hartmann (Manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Hartmann (born August 7, 1938 in Berlin ; † January 13, 2014 in Düsseldorf ) was a German lawyer and industry manager and chairman of the board and supervisory board of the energy companies VEBA and E.ON AG .

Life

The son of former Finance Secretary and VEBA CEO Alfred Hartmann (1894-1967) studied after high school in Bonn from 1958 to 1967 law at the universities of Munich, Berlin and Bonn. After passing the second state examination, he initially worked as an auditor for Treuarbeit AG in Düsseldorf until 1971 . From 1971 to 1972 he was assistant to the executive board at Deutsche Leasing AG .

From 1973 Hartmann worked for VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG in Gelsenkirchen . He was legal counsel there until 1975 , then head of the board of directors until 1980. In 1980 he became a board member of VEBA subsidiary Nordwestdeutsche Kraftwerke AG (NWK) in Hamburg , responsible for finance, accounting, law and taxes. In 1985 the NWK merged with PreussenElektra and Hartmann was CFO of PreussenElektra AG from 1985 to 1989.

Since 1989 Hartmann was also CFO of the VEBA parent company. After the accidental death of the previous VEBA boss Klaus Piltz , Hartmann became the new CEO in April 1993 and retained this position after VEBA and VIAG merged to form E.ON AG in 2000 . By acquiring the voting shares from BP and RAG AG from the owners of Ruhrgas AG , he initiated the subsequent takeover of the leading German gas company by E.ON. Hartmann was an advocate of a corporate policy that placed shareholder value in the foreground of corporate activity.

In May 2003, Wulf Bernotat was elected as his successor as Chairman of the Board. Hartmann moved to the top of the E.ON Supervisory Board (until May 2011). In addition, he was on the supervisory board of several companies such as Daimler and Henkel as well as chairman of the supervisory boards of Ruhrgas AG, RAG and Munich Re . He was chairman of the supervisory board of IKB Deutsche Industriebank when it fell into an existential crisis in July 2007 . The German bank had IKB secured bad US mortgage loans sold (at a time when they have already bet on a decline in the value of these securities) and IKB cut the credit lines on July 27 of 2007. Hartmann was also a member of the board of directors at Deutsche Bank and thus possibly had a conflict of interest. Until March 2008 (when the 2007 annual general meeting took place) he was Chairman of the IKB Supervisory Board; Werner Oerter was his successor.

Hartmann died on January 13, 2014 after a long and serious illness at the age of 75.

He was married and had two children.
