Ulrich Knefelkamp

Ulrich Knefelkamp (born February 26, 1951 in Herford ) is a German historian .

Ulrich Knefelkamp studied history, art history and folklore from 1973 to 1975 at the University of Würzburg and from 1975 to 1980 history, folklore, ethnology, art history, medical history and geography at the University of Freiburg . In 1980 he received his doctorate in history, folklore and ethnology in Freiburg with the thesis The health system in medieval Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1985 he received his doctorate in ethnology and folklore in Freiburg with the thesis The search for the kingdom of the priest king Johannes. Represented using travel reports and other ethnographic sources from the 12th to 17th centuries. Century. From 1980 to 1988 Knefelkamp was an assistant at the Chair for Medieval History in Bamberg . In 1987 he completed his habilitation in Middle and Modern History with a thesis on the Heilig-Geist-Spital in Nuremberg from the 14th to 17th centuries. In 1988/89 he was a deputy professor for Dietmar Rothermund at the University of Heidelberg . In 1989/90 he was senior assistant at the Chair of Medieval History in Bamberg. From 1990 to 1992 Knefelkamp was a substitute professor for the Middle Ages and Thuringian regional history at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . From 1992 to 1993 he was senior assistant and 1993/94 chair representative in Bamberg. From 1994 to 2016 Knefelkamp taught as a professor for medieval history of Central Europe and regional cultural history at the European University Viadrina . He was one of the first professors to be appointed to the Faculty of Cultural Studies in 1994. In 1996 he founded the “Friends' Association for Research into the History of the Viadrina”, which deals with the history of the first Brandenburg State University.

His main research interests are social history, especially the city and urban population groups, medical and social history, especially the history of epidemics, the history of medieval science, women's and gender history, and the emergence of European identity and culture. Knefelkamp published, among other things, on hospital history.
