Ulrich Maximilian Schumann

Ulrich Maximilian Schumann (born March 23, 1964 in Kuppenheim ) is an art and architecture historian and publicist.

Live and act

Schumann, who studied in Heidelberg and Bonn , worked at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main before taking up teaching at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1994 and there in 1999 with a thesis on the architect Wilhelm von Tettau (1872–1929) and architecture received his doctorate in the crisis of liberalism . At the University of Karlsruhe , Schumann completed his habilitation in 2009 with his work Friedrich Weinbrenner: Classicism and “Practical Aesthetics” .

After further teaching positions at Harvard University, TU Delft, University of Karlsruhe and TU Dortmund, he has been teaching European Cultural History at the Université de Strasbourg in the Euroculture master’s course since 2014 .

A focus of Schumann's writings and exhibitions are buildings and architects in Baden, for example Rotenfels Castle in Gaggenau, Friedrichsbad in Baden-Baden , the artist Max Laeuger (1864–1952), the architect and theoretician Heinrich Hübsch and, above all, again and again Karlsruhe builder Friedrich Weinbrenner (1766–1826).

Schumann worked as a research assistant for the Friedrich Weinbrenner project of the Southwest German Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering (saai) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology until 2010 and has been President of the Friedrich Weinbrenner Society since then.

Schumann, who has been a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party since the late 1990s , applied in 2011 as a challenger to Michael Beck (CDU) for the office of Lord Mayor of the city of Tuttlingen and received 31.6% of the vote. He has not been a party member since 2015.
