Ulrich Unger

Ulrich Unger (born December 10, 1930 in Leipzig , † December 16, 2006 in Münster ) was a German sinologist.

He taught from 1966 to 1996 at the University of Münster. The focus of his research was Classical Chinese , i. H. which in the 5th to 3rd century BC Spoken language in China. He worked on improving Karlgren's reconstructions of the sounds for the Classical period. He is the author of a series of more than 75 sinological newsletters that have been sent to friends and colleagues under the title Hao-ku .

Unger has been head of the DFG project "Dictionary of Classical Chinese" since 1998. He developed his own transliteration for the transcription of Classical Chinese , the so-called Unger system .

For his 70th birthday, a commemorative publication was published under the title “And now follow what my heart desires”. It contains a list of his sinological work.

In 2019, his previously never fully published Classical Chinese Grammar was published online for free download from CrossAsia-eBooks. The grammar actually consisted of nine volumes, but was combined into a single PDF document for online publication for better searchability.
