Ulrich Werder (born September 4, 1951 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association . There he played for 1. FC Union Berlin and FC Vorwärts Frankfurt .

Athletic career

The company sports community (BSG) Traktor in the village of Flatow was Werder's first stop in his career as a football player. He started there in 1960 at the age of nine in the children's team and played there until he was junior. In 1968 he moved to the neighboring Hennigsdorf and joined BSG Motor . After he had outgrown the junior age in 1969, Werder played for Motor in the third-rate district league Potsdam . In the meantime he had learned the trade of a mechanical engineer.

For the 1970/71 season the 1.73 m tall Werder was delegated to the first league promoted 1. FC Union Berlin. After appearances in the district league team Union II, he was used on April 18, 1971 for the first time in the league team. In the match of the 19th match day Union Berlin - SG Dynamo Dresden (2: 1) he came on the field in the 57th. Werder also played in the following five top division point games, he was in the starting eleven in three games. After 17 league appearances in 1971/72, he played only the first two league games in 1972/73. After the 1972/73 season Union had to relegate again to the GDR league , which Werder used to establish itself as a regular. In the three league seasons from 1973 to 1976 he played 90 of the 100 competitive games. From 1976/77 Union played again in the league, and Werder continued to be a regular player with 22 league games as a midfielder. Also for the 1977/78 season he was again nominated midfielder for the starting eleven and also played the first eight point games. In November 1977 Werder was called up for military service after 150 competitive games for Union Berlin, including 55 league games with two goals, which he had to do at the top club of the army sports association, FC Vorwärts Frankfurt.

Werder was already used three months later from the beginning of the second half of 1977/78 in the league team of FC Vorwärts and played as a midfielder all 13 point games. At the end of the season forward was determined as relegated, so that Werder 1978/79 had to play again in the GDR league. There he played 21 of the 30 point and promotion games and thus had a significant role in the immediate return to the league. In the new league season 1979/80 Werder came only between the 15th and 26th matchday in eleven games mainly as a substitute for use. He was increasingly displaced by younger midfielders such as André Jarmuszkiewicz and Frieder Andrich and came in 1980/81 only on the 11th and 14th match day to two league appearances. Also for the 1981/82 season Werder was nominated for the league team of FC Vorwärts, but was no longer used there. In November 1981 he was discharged from the army and FC Vorwärts with the rank of sergeant major.

From February to April 1982 the now 40-year-old Werder played for the GDR league club BSG Bergmann-Borsig Berlin and in the summer of 1982 joined the GDR league promoted BSG KWO Berlin . After a year KWO was relegated to the district league, in which Werder remained active until the end of the 1984/85 season and winning the district championship. Then Werder ended his career as a soccer player at the age of 44.
