Life

Von Alemann has been married to Monika von Alemann-Schwartz since 1968, with whom he has two sons. He lives with his wife in the north of Düsseldorf.

Von Alemann studied political science , sociology , constitutional law and history in Cologne as well as in Münster , Bonn and Edmonton ( Canada ) . In 1971 he received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Two years later, von Alemann received his doctorate from the University of Bonn , where he worked as a research assistant from 1972 to 1978 . From 1978 to 1984 he taught political science at the Pedagogical University of Rhineland , Neuss department , and at the University of Duisburg .

In 1984 he founded the political science department at the Fernuniversität in Hagen and took over the management of the "General Political Science" department for the next fourteen years.

In 1998 he moved to HHU , where he took over the Chair of Political Science II. From 2004 to 2009 he was first vice dean , then dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. For a long time he served as a liaison professor for the Hans Böckler Foundation. From 2009 until his retirement in 2012, von Alemann was Vice Rector for Teaching and Study Quality at HHU.

Since his retirement in 2012, he has continued to take on research and teaching tasks and special tasks for the rectorate. He was the Rector's representative for the organization of the 50th anniversary of the HHU in 2015. Since 2015, he has also been a member of the Advisory Board for University Funding at the HHU. In addition, since January 1, 2018, he has been appointed managing director of the “Association for the Promotion of the Knowledge Region eV”. He continues to work as a political publicist in the media and in policy advice.

Projects

In 1977 von Alemann was a founding member of the “Participation Research Study Group” in Bonn, which was working on a project funded by the DFG on theoretical and empirical problems of participation. In addition, from 1984 to 1989 he was project manager at the project management agency (Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Social Research and Political Advice eV at the University of Duisburg) for the research and design program "Man and Technology: Socially Compatible Technology Design", which the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with a Funding volume of approx. 100 million DM was financed.

From 1993 to 1998 he was the founder and head of the “Research Initiative Associations” (FIVE), whose work has now been completed.

The "Institute for German and European Party Law and Party Research" (PRuF) at the HHU in Düsseldorf , which was co-founded by Alemann, became known for its leading role in the processing and clarification of the various party financing scandals. Basic research on party law and social science party problems form the scientific basis of PRuF. In 2009 von Alemann worked for the PRuF together with Tim Spier on the research project “German Party Membership Study” (PaMiS) of the PRuF at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the political sociology department at Leibniz University Hannover.

Von Alemann was a member of the Federal President's Party Financing Commission and through this activity had a major influence on the reform of the political party law in 2002. Von Alemann had dealt with questions of party financing, which were also taken up in his textbook "The Party System of the Federal Republic of Germany".

In 1998 von Alemann founded the “Research Initiative NRW in Europe” (FINE). This was a project that combined research, policy advice and political journalism. This resulted in the publications of the “Europe in North Rhine-Westphalia Handbook - Who does what in North Rhine-Westphalia for Europe?” (3rd edition together with Anne Gödde, Hartwig Hummel and Claudia Münch, Wiesbaden 2010). A public symposium was held annually, the results of which were partially published, according to Alemann et al. “A social Europe is possible” (Wiesbaden 2015).

Von Alemann deals with the state politics of North Rhine-Westphalia. He has published two books on this: “North Rhine-Westphalia - A Land is Rediscovering itself” (Stuttgart 2000) and “North Rhine-Westphalia - A Land is Looking Forward” (Stuttgart 2016).

In addition to party research , association research, European research and NRW research, von Alemann also dealt with political corruption. The shallows in German party funding led him to investigate the causes, historical conditions, cultural factors and manifestations of political corruption more closely. This not only resulted in a scientific anthology that presented a political science inventory of political corruption in Germany, but also invitations from other countries to speak about the causes and consequences of corruption there, in Mexico City, Moscow, São Paulo and Bangladesh.

Since his retirement, von Alemann has increasingly focused on networking the HHU with the city and the region. This resulted in the “Förderverein Wissensregion Düsseldorf eV” in 2017, which he now serves as managing director. Members of this association are not only universities in the state capital, but also the two chambers for industry and craft, the city of Düsseldorf and a number of other institutions.
