The Ultra Music Festival ( UMF ) is a three-day open air - music festival in the area of electronic dance music , which since 1999 in downtown Miami takes place. While the festival previously took place at the end of the Musikmesse Winter Music Conference (WMC) at the end of March, it has now become the main event of Miami Music Week.

development

The two businessmen Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes, who were still at the beginning of their careers, shared a common vision during the 1990s: “A music festival that would take place right on the beach in a big city.” They continued to expand and Faibisch, who followed a tour of Depeche Mode in 1993 , named the festival "Ultra" after their album of the same name.

The festival was supposed to be the official closing event of the week-long Musikmesse Winter Music Conference (WMC). It took place in South Beach (Miami Beach) . Despite well-known appearances by Paul van Dyk , Armand van Helden or Josh Wink and ten thousand visitors, a loss of around 10,000 to 20,000 US dollars was reported. In the following year, attempts were made to score points by enlarging the site and developing the line-up. The number of visitors increased dramatically. In 2001, the festival moved to Bayfront Park in Miami to present a larger area. It took place there with 45,000 visitors until 2005. From 2006 it was held in the Bicentennial Park , from 2007 the festival was held for the first time over two days. Several floors were created and DJs such as David Guetta, Tiësto and Carl Cox found their way to Miami Beach.

In 2011 the festival was played for the first time with 150,000 visitors over three days from Friday to Sunday and, unlike in previous years, no longer took place as a final event of the Winter Music Conference , which was held two weeks earlier in Miami. The second of five anniversary events of the weekly radio show “ A State Of Trance ” was also integrated at the Ultra Music Festival 2011 . She celebrated her 500th episode. According to a stage announcement, the tickets were sold in over 70 countries.

In 2012 the festival took place again at the end of the Winter Music Conference with 165,000 visitors and has been held again in Bayfront Park since then .

In 2013 the festival took place on two consecutive weekends. It thus framed the Winter Music Conference . 330,000 visitors were counted on a total of 6 days, which was a record number of visitors. At the end of the festival, the Swedish DJ trio Swedish House Mafia gave their last joint appearance as part of their One Last Tour .

In 2014 the festival was held on one weekend at the end of the Winter Music Conference with over 200 DJs on eight stages. Headliners included Afrojack , Alesso , Armin van Buuren , Carl Cox , David Guetta , Diplo , Hardwell , Nicky Romero , Steve Angello , Tiësto and Zedd .

In 2015, the UMF took place from March 27th to 29th, with the following headliners: Skrillex , Diplo , Jack Ü , David Guetta, Avicii , Adam Beyer , Deep Dish , Eric Prydz , Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex and Steve Aoki . According to the organizer, around 165,000 visitors came.

In 2016 the festival took place from March 18th to 20th. Headliners were Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, Carl Cox, Dash Berlin , David Guetta, deadmau5 , Hardwell, Kaskade , Martin Garrix , DJ Snake , Steve Angello, Tiësto and Zedd. In addition, the bands Pendulum and Rabbit in the Moon celebrated their reunion. Around 170,000 visitors came.

In March 2018 the festival celebrated its 20th anniversary. In addition to well-known headliners of the EDM scene, the reunification of the Swedish House Mafia as a closing act attracted a lot of attention.

On September 27, 2018, the Miami City Commission decided against a 5-year contract for the leasing of Bayfront Park to the organizers of the Ultra Music Festival. In a public meeting, the commission voted unanimously against extending the contract. The official Twitter account of the Ultra Music Festival regrets this decision, but guarantees that the 2019 festival will take place in Miami as usual. In the afternoon session on November 15, 2018, the Miami City Council voted 4-1 to move the festival to Historic Virginia Key Beach Park & Miami Marine Stadium.

The Ultra Music Festival was originally supposed to return to the previous festival site in Bayfront Park from March 22 to 24, 2020 . The promoters and the City of Miami signed the contract on January 16, 2020. The headliners included A. Afrojack , Armin Van Buuren, Oliver Heldens , Martin Garrix , Carl Cox , DJ Snake, Above & Beyond, David Guetta and Kygo. Due to the current situation around the coronavirus, the festival is about to end in 2020 and will not take place this year. This decision was made after a meeting between politicians and the organizers.

Offshoots and Road to Ultra events

The first offshoot of the festival has been in Ibiza since 2007 . In the course of time, other ultra festivals followed in several cities. In addition, the “Road to Ultra” events developed, each with a pre-party. These take place in different clubs. With its wide spread, the Ultra Music Festival is considered the largest international festival brand worldwide.
