The film Under Pressure (alternative title: American Amok - Your enemy lives next door) with actor Charlie Sheen in the lead role is an American thriller from 1997 .

action

Fireman Lyle Wilder (Charlie Sheen) is stylized as a hero by the media for rescuing a baby from a burning drug lab. Beneath the shiny surface, however, he is a psychopath abandoned by his wife and son who is terrorizing his neighbors, the Braverton family. He feels provoked by the poor upbringing of the children in his opinion.

The tense situation escalates when Zach Braverton accidentally throws his friend's model airplane against Wilder's window pane. Wilder storms into the house of the neighboring family, threatening the mother and children who are present. He can suppress a first emergency call to the police by pretending to be the father of the Braverton family and appeasing the police at the emergency call center. In the course of the argument it becomes clear that Wilder blames his mother, as a good friend of his ex-wife, for the failure of his own relationship.

In a dream scene it turns out that Wilder has difficulties distinguishing his own family from the neighboring family and that he deliberately let the drug addict mother of the infant who was saved at the time die in the fire. Shortly afterwards, an electrician of Chinese descent got his address wrongly. Wilder's racist abuse escalates into a wild brawl. Wilder gains the upper hand and cruelly tortures his victim to death. When the police finally arrives at the Braverton family because of his intrusion, he is able to convince the officers at the door, so to speak, among colleagues that in reality it was not him but Father Braverton who was the aggressive attacker. However, doubts remain in one of the police officers.

In the evening, the Bravertons return home from a trip to find that their living room has been devastated. For their protection, they take out an old, inherited rifle, but for reasons of legal uncertainty they do not inform the police, believing that the perpetrator has left the house. But Wilder hides in the closet in the children's room, scares the children to death and only then withdraws. When the Bravertons finally make the decision to call the police, they - informed by Wilder - arrive.

This time, doubts about the domestic violence theory prevail among the officers so much that they decide to arrest Wilder. In the latter's house, however, they carelessly separate, and Wilder is able to murder one after the other the police officers who have been alerted despite finding the mechanic's body. Likewise, Father Braverton, who wants to be present at the arrest in a fit of glee and satisfaction, is overwhelmed by Wilder.

Together with the unconscious father, Wilder comes to the Bravertons' house one last time to raise his wife and children - whom he cannot tell from his own. To do this, he chooses the brutal method that he once adopted from his father: he plays Russian roulette with the family. Mother Braverton recognizes the schizophrenic disorder and can pretend to be Wilder's ex-wife long enough before she and her husband can attack Wilder. Finally she shoots Wilder with a single bullet from his revolver.
