The Universal Media Disc ( UMD ) is a by Sony specifically for the PlayStation Portable developed storage medium to games , movies and music to play on the PlayStation Portable.

The round storage medium (similar to a DVD ) is protected by a plastic cover ( caddy, cartridge, similar to a floppy disk ). Basically, the UMD is similar in design and dimensions to Sony's MiniDisc , which was intended to be the successor to the audio cassette.

The UMD is no longer used in the successor to the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita , which was introduced on January 27, 2011 .

A UMD is a small DVD . In May 2005, several release groups independently managed to read UMD media. According to you, UMD media are standard DVDs with a smaller diameter, which also results in the lower capacity, encased in a plastic protective sleeve. The media are formatted in ISO 9660 format. They can be read out using a USB connection between PSP and computer or PS3.

Regional codes

Most UMD films are restricted to the specific region in which the film is sold. In contrast, UMD games are provided with the region code "0", which makes them compatible with every PlayStation Portable system. The system is different from the region code of the DVD only by the assignment of Latin America Region 1 place fourth

  • Region 1: United States, Canada, United States Territories, Latin America
  • Region 2: Europe, Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland, French Territories
  • Region 3: Republic of China (Taiwan), South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore
  • Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands
  • Region 5: Russia, Eastern Europe, Pakistan, India, North Korea, Mongolia and most of Africa
  • Region 6: People's Republic of China
